Inspiration of Children's Curiosity

The project was created to captivate children's innate curiosity about the natural world, specifically focusing on the fascinating process of metamorphosis that many animals, particularly insects, undergo.

By combining educational content with the engaging format of cartoons, this installation aims to provide a dynamic learning experience. It allows children to explore and understand the remarkable transformations from small saplings to towering trees and the extraordinary metamorphoses in animals. This educational tool not only enriches children's knowledge about nature's mysteries but also makes the learning process enjoyable and memorable.

Research & Interview:
62% of Children are unfamiliar with Metamorphosis

To assess children’s awareness and interest in metamorphosis, I interviewed
five pairs of parents and children. While children were unfamiliar with the term "metamorphosis," they recognized that some animals and insects undergo significant body changes. Notably, a child’s understanding of biological metamorphosis is more influenced by extracurricular learning than age. This highlights the importance of an educational installation in enhancing children’s understanding through engaging content.

Jennifer (6 years old)

“I don't know what metamorphosis is, but I know butterflies are caterpillars when they are young.”

Jennifer (6 years old)

“Frogs were tadpoles before they became frogs. Taptoles grow hind legs first, then grow out the front legs..”

Thomas (9 years old)

Butterflies were silkworms before they become butterflies.

Design Concept

This interactive educational installation enhances children’s understanding of metamorphosis in insects and animals through three engaging screens, each showcasing a different stage of transformation.

The first screen illustrates frog eggs turning into tadpoles underwater. The second shows tadpoles evolving into frogs, moving from water to land. The final screen displays dragonfly nymphs and caterpillars transforming into dragonflies and butterflies, highlighting their journey from ground to sky.

Audience interaction is central to the experience; as viewers move their hands, the animals on screen mimic their actions, and clicking advances the scene to the next life stage. This immersive installation not only educates but also actively engages children, making learning about metamorphosis both fun and memorable.
